Boston University gave up its fantasy football advice program in the mid-1980s and the school is better than ever now. Admittedly, the football program was nothing special – Hockey is the big sport on campus – but as I recall, the decision was made that inappropriate resources were going to benefit few students and that the money could be better spent elsewhere.
That said, my daughter is a junior at U Miami (music school, among the best in the country) and this scandal is will likely cast an awful pall over the campus. A big-name football team is part of the attraction of attending a school like UM and students (and parents) are also losers when out-of-control boosters and selfish, look-the-other-way (or worse) administrators screw things up.
